Notes: This folk art piece depicts Saint Ignatius Loyola (1491 - 1556), the founder, alongside Peter Faber and saint Francis Xavier, of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits. The Jesuits are dedicated to missionary work and teaching and played an important role in the Counter- Reformation. Ignatius was an inspired spiritual director who developed the Spiritual Exercises, simple meditations, prayers and mental exercises known as Ignatian spirituality. He is also the foremost patron saint of soldiers. The folk art portrait celebrates a spiritual warrior who set the world on fire. He clutches The Holy Bible close to his heart. The four borders of the canvas are emblazoned with the fiery Jesuit emblem of the Holy Name. Saint Ignatius is robed in a traditional Jesuit colors.
